Concert benefits Japanese orphans

Vancouver Okinawa Taiko presents “Chimugukuru: A Celebration of the Heart, Soul and Spirit,” on October 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby. The Japan earthquake and tsunami orphan benefit concert includes Okinawan song and drum dancing, and all proceeds will be donated to the Ashinaga Education and Scholarship Organization.
For fifty years, Ashinaga has provided educational and psychological support to children worldwide who have lost their parents. Two years ago, Vancouver Okinawa-ken Yuaikai held a benefit concert for the same cause. Proceeds from that concert went toward the completion of three Tohoku Rainbow Houses, which are support centres for orphaned children in the cities of Sendai, Rikuzentakada and Ishinomaki in the Tohoku region.
Chimugukuru means “compassion” in the Okinawan language, and this concert features renowned Okinawan performing artists Chijinshu Wakatiida and Hidekatsu. The concert also features the large Hira taiko, 4 feet in diameter, made by taiko drum maker Dan Lindenmeyer.
The concert takes place at Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby on October 16 at 7:00 p.m. with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $20, and students and seniors pay $10. Children three and under are free. Learn more at vanokinawataiko.ca.
