G Day celebrates girl’s empowerment

Girls need to feel celebrated and supported as they begin the early stages of their journey to adulthood. G Day is a social movement anchored by a day of events that emphasize self-esteem and leadership for girls aged 10-12.
G Day is a conscious celebration that is designed to create a bond of sisterhood among girls. Sessions will not talk about the scientific ins and outs of growing up, but rather having a positive attitude about it, feeling inspired about developing your dreams, and embracing the future.
Programming will also be available for elder siblings, grandparents, and other family members for the final 90 minutes of the day.
G Day is a much needed response to the fact that nearly half of Canadian girls between the ages of 10 and 17 avoid social activities like going to the beach, going to school, participating in physical activities, or giving an opinion because they feel badly about the way they look.
Local actor Lynda Jao will join the line-up of 12 speakers at G Day. Jao identifies herself as an all-time geek and a feminist. She believes that through science and math, we can tell endless stories about the wonders of the world and make decisions today that affect the wellness of generations after us.
“I am inspired to participate in G Day and talk about the gender-based bullying I have experienced,” says Jao. “I'm inspired to let young girls know that their gender is not a barrier to what they can accomplish!”
G Day takes place Sunday, November 2 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at The Chan Centre for Performing Arts at UBC. For information and tickets, visit www.gdayforgirls.com.
