Surrey Sikh cadets hail a community champion

Major Jim Blomme, the outgoing commanding officer of the 3300 BCR (Bhai Kanhaiya) Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in Surrey was honoured by the Sikh community in a poignant ceremony last Thursday 30th November, 2014.
Major Blomme was the first commanding officer of the 3300 BCR (Bhai Kanhaiya) Cadet Corps, the first such unit to be sponsored by the Sikh Community in Canada.
“Major Jim Blomme has been there right from start, through thick and thin, the triumphs and the adversity to make the Bhai Kanhaiya cadets a dream come true for the Sikh Community and the Canadian cadet corps family,” said founding member Harbinder Singh Sewak.
“You, Major Jim Blomme have helped us leave a permanent mark on this community, this city, this province and this country,” said Sewak, the chair of the Friends of the Sikh Cadets Society.
The Bhai Kanhaiya Cadets, which was formed about two years ago, in now one of the fastest growing units in BC with over 60 cadets.
In recognition of his service, the Friends of the Sikh Cadet Society and the Parent Sponsor Committee of the 3300 BCR have initiated a special award under Major Jim Blomme’s name.
The Major Jim Blomme Top Cadet Spirit Award is presented to the Cadet who exemplifies the qualities expected of corps - participation, effort, teamwork, attitude, commitment and a determination to succeed.
“This award in Major Blomme’s name is to recognize his bold and groundbreaking efforts to help the Sikh community with its initiative to create the Bhai Kanhaiya Cadets Corps,” said Sewak.
Ms. Meena Ghag, chair of the parent committee of the 3300 BCR said Major Jim Blomme’s calm and effective style always ensured that the community leaders never lost sight of our goals.
“The Bhai Kanhaiya cadets success has a great deal to do with the experienced leadership of Major Jim Blomme,” she said.
Harbinder Singh Sewak, was presented with "coin of excellence" by Major Jim Blomme, for his contribution to the cadet corps.
Major Jim Blomme will be replaced by Major Lee Taylor, who was officially welcomed at the same ceremony.
