Engineering body assists foreign degree holders

Engineers Canada is the national non-profit organization that represents all of Canada’s provincial and territorial engineering associations that regulate the practice of engineering in Canada.

Engineering is a self-regulated profession. These associations regulate every aspect of the engineering profession in their respective jurisdictions. Together, they license the country's 270,000 members of the engineering profession. In Canada, there is no national engineering licence and Engineers Canada does not grant licences to practise.

Engineers Canada and the provincial and territorial engineering regulatory bodies work together to advance the profession in the public interest.
Engineers Canada serves its associations by delivering national programs that ensure the highest standards of engineering education, professional qualifications and professional practice. For example, Engineers Canada helps develop guidelines, examinations and national engineering standards. In addition, Engineers Canada has developed, and continues to work on, a number of processes to make access to the profession easier for international engineering graduates.

Engineers Canada, with funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, developed the Roadmap to Engineering in Canada as a single source of information for international engineering graduates looking to become licensed engineers in Canada.
The website has information on a range of topics, such as: how to prepare before coming to Canada, comparing your education to a Canadian education, obtaining a professional engineering licence, finding the right employment, fitting into the Canadian engineering profession, and immigrating to Canada.

Through the site’s Academic Information Tool, potential licensure applicants can see how their undergraduate education compares to Canadian engineering programs and if their education is sufficient to begin the process of becoming licensed. In doing so, they’ll gain a better understanding into how their specific backgrounds translate to the Canadian environment.

If you are a graduate of an engineering program outside of Canada and your career plans include becoming an engineer in this country, visit the Roadmap to Engineering in Canada: newcomers.engineerscanada.ca.
