Learn to fish in the city

Does your child want to learn how to catch trout?
Since launching in 2006, the Learn to Fish program has taught over 150,000 youngsters between the ages of five and 15 how to fish – proof that fishing is as popular as ever. Learn to Fish is run by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC with generous support from the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Rapala, Dodge Ram, and the Province of British Columbia.
Learn to Fish classes run at North Vancouver’s Rice Lake, in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve; Coquitlam’s Lafarge Lake; Vancouver’s Sanctuary Pond, in Hastings Park; and Surrey’s Green Timbers Park.
All fishing tackle and equipment are provided.
At many of the locations, your child can borrow a rod and reel to continue fishing after the class has ended.
In one hands-on, two-hour session, your child will learn where, when, and how to catch fish, including:
• fish identification, biology, and habitat
• regulations, conservation, and fishing ethics
• safe use of rods, reels, and tackle, with practice casting and retrieving
• handling and care of fish
All classes require pre-registration and parental supervision.
