Restaurant Review: Acme Café

Special to The Post

I decided to get the Turkey Sandwich featuring brie, cranberry-grand marnier sauce, grainy dijon mustard and arugula on a grilled ciabatta panini. I was impressed to with real slices of thickly cut turkey breast until I discovered they were super dry. Thankfully the rest of the sandwich was much better. The combination of the creamy, melted brie, sweet and tart cranberry-grand marnier sauce, and peppery arugula worked nicely together. The tasty ciabatta bread that was grilled to the perfect crisp texture was just the cherry on top. I would seriously consider ordering this again – minus the turkey.
With all sandwiches you get a side soup or potato chips with a broccoli almond slaw. I upgraded my side to the Macaroni and Cheese as it was one of their signature dishes. I’m glad I ordered it. This was a solid rendition of the comfort food classic. The noodles were soft, but the cheesy flavour was there. There was also a really nice crispy bit of cheddar with crunchy bread crumbs.
I  ordered the Daily Quiche featuring pork belly, portobello mushrooms, and red peppers. The crust was light and flakey; the quiche packed with flavour. The pork belly bits were small and a bit dry. They still had a meaty flavour. The star ingredient was the portobello mushroom which was meaty, thick, and moist. The quiche was served with a fresh side salad, and the Soup of the Day which was a Tomato, Red Pepper, and Chorizo. The soup was smooth, tasting similar to the sauce in a pot of chili. I would have preferred some visible ingredients.
There were a couple of stumbles, but overall I enjoyed the meal. I’d still like to return to try their brunch. I would like to try their cakes, pies, and other goodies which I’ve heard some good things about.
