Restaurant Review: Cartems Donuterie

Special to The Post

We split a half dozen donuts, including regular and speciality ones.
The Canadian Whiskey Bacon features a cake donut topped with a glaze consisting of whiskey, bacon fat, and maple extract, and pieces of house made double smoked bacon. The whiskey flavour is not overpowering. The donut itself was moist, not too dense. The bacon was tasty; its saltiness balanced the sweetness.
The London Fog featured a cake donut topped with an earl grey and lavander glaze and filled with an earl grey mousse. I’m a big fan of these flavours, so I thought I would like it, but I preferred their regular Earl Grey donut instead.
The Salted Caramel lacked the caramel drizzle. It simply tasted like a glazed chocolate donut with sea salt. This was the least favorite donut.
One of the better donuts was the Triple Chocolate Threat featuring a chocolate cake topped with chocolate ganache, with callebaut chocolate pearls. The moist donut was chocolatey, and I enjoyed the contrast of the soft cake to the crunchy pearls.
We had the Key Lime Stuffie featuring a key lime cheesecake stuffing and citrus glaze with a graham cracker crumble. This donut had a punch of lime flavour. Thegraham cracker crumble gave a slight crunch.
Watermelon wound up being my favorite donut as it really did taste like the fruit. This was moist and fluffy; the bright flavour of watermelon and cucumber helped lighten each otherwise heavy bite. A unique donut flavour that worked surprisingly well.
Overall the donuts were just too sweet, but I don’t have a sweet tooth. I will give props to Cartem’s for some truly unique flavours though. I probably won’t be back myself, but I would still recommend them to anyone looking for some gourmet treats.
