Restaurant Review: Catch Kitchen & Bar

Catch Kitchen and Bar is a new restaurant with a completely renovated interior and menu in Steveston. We decided to check it out.

Perusing the menu, we split some appetizers, including the Crispy Calamari featured battered and deep fried line-caught squid with red and green onions, and tzatziki for dipping. The squid was tender with a slight chew, but the breading did not adhere to it, making the it difficult to eat. The flavours were on point. The deep fried breading was well seasoned, and the red onions provided a nice sharp bite. The tzatziki was nicely balanced with plenty of garlic and cucumber.

We also ordered the Crab Cakesfeaturing crab meat, red peppers, and green onion, and served with a chipotle aioli. I love crab cakes, but was disappointed these were mostly filler with very little actual crab meat. The predominant flavour was the red peppers rather than the sweet crab meat. I used the chipotle aioli for more flavour. I will say, however, that the panko crust was nicely fried where it was crispy with little grease.

For our last appetizer we had the Spinach and Artichoke Dip served with tortilla chips. This was described as containing spinach, artichoke hearts, and a blend of cheeses, and so I was expecting a stringy, cheesy concoction. Instead this turned out to be a heavy, warm, mayonnaise-based dip that was not stringy. The major flavours were parmesan and garlic, with a more subtle artichoke flavour. In the end we couldn’t finish it.

In the end, the appetizers that we tried were mediocre. Although I won’t be going out of my way to visit Catch Kitchen and Bar again anytime soon, I still consider it a success.
