Restaurant Review: Gringo

We tried the tacos but didn`t add any additional toppings or hot sauce. We wanted to get a good taste of the base ingredients. All tacos are served with a double layer of warm soft corn tortillas.

The Chuck featured house-seasoned ground beef, salsa, and green onion, and was my favorite. The beef was seasoned enough. The tomatoes and cilantro in the raw salsa brightened up the taco, while the red onion added some sharpness.

My second favorite was The Wilbur featuring mazatlan braised pork, chilies, vinegar, and pickled onions. The winning ingredient was the pork itself, which was moist and full of pork flavour. Although the chilies and pickled onions added extra layers of flavour, it was the pork that gave it most of its flavour.

The Austin featured brisket, fried onions, and slaw. The brisket was surprisingly moist and well seasoned with plenty of spice, although little heat. There was only minimal slaw and slightly soggy fried onions.

The Encino featuring spicy pulled roast chicken, ranch, and salsa was my least favorite. The chicken lacked flavour and was dry which not even the ranch dressing could help.

The Pink featured poached white fish, chimmichurri, slaw, and tomatillo sauce. The delicate flavour of the fish was overwhelmed by the copious amount of chimmichurri and tomatillo sauce. I would ask for less sauce if I were to order this again.

The Mugroso featured chili veggies, rise, roasted corn, zucchini, and tomatillo which felt a little boring. This was chili in a tortilla. Not really a true taco.

I doubt I would return. The tacos are average. Considering Gastown prices, it’s probably the cheapest food that you can find in the area. This might make a good spot when you’re drunk and looking for cheap eats to fill your stomach.
