OECD‘s figures compare two generations-the 25 to 34 age group and those aged 45 to 54. Among the older group, Korea had one of the lowest levels of university participation.

The South Korean success was also reflected in test results. In math skills, South Korean teens ranked second in place behind Finland.

According to a South Korean embassy spokesperson, great value is attached to education in the country which is seen as a way of achieving individual and national economic success.

In the 60s, South Korea had the same national wealth level as Afghanistan.
