Kwantlen student, Scott Young, has participated in three international trade missions, rubbing elbows with government, business and educational leaders to promote Canadian trade, education and culture, and all before turning 18.

Young, who is set to graduate with an Associate of Arts Degree in General Studies this spring, is 17, making him Kwantlen‘s youngest student. He was assessed as gifted at an early age and was encouraged to apply to Kwantlen after finishing Grade 8. On his fifteenth birthday, he took Kwantlen‘s placement test and was accepted to the university.

While taking courses at Kwantlen, Young was selected to become a member of Junior Team Canada, a program that connects young Canadians with community, business and government leaders and gives them an opportunity to participate in international trade missions.

Junior Team Canada members research and raise funds from local businesses and organizations, which they in turn represent during their international travels.

The Langley resident most recently added Korea to his list of international visits, participating in the APEC Summit in Busan, Korea, which wrapped up on November 19. As the only youth delegate from British Columbia, Young met with leaders and other delegates to learn about their perspective on various issues important to the Asia Pacific region.

In order to take part in the APEC Summit in November, Young raised $4,000. His sponsors include Telus, Telus International, the Canada Korea Business Association, Terminal Systems Inc. and the Vancouver International Airport Authority.

In August, Young took part in an international mission to Brazil. He met with representatives of businesses and educational institutions, the latter of which was on behalf of Kwantlen, which was one of his sponsors.

“Traveling to Brazil was a very positive and interesting experience,“ said Young. “I was very surprised by the level of entrepreneurship in universities as well as the level of corporate responsibility within businesses and corporations.“

“As British Columbia inarguably has a greater stake in good, productive Asia Pacific relations than any other Canadian province, I intend to aggressively portray Greater Vancouver, British Columbia and Canada as a destination of choice in Asia-Pacific because this region is where British Columbia‘s future lies,” said Young.

Young is currently taking courses at Kwantlen‘s Langley campus. He says he is grateful to Kwantlen for accepting him at a young age and for the experience and opportunities it has provided.

Kwantlen University College‘s mission is to create an exceptional learning environment committed to preparing learners for leadership, service and success. Kwantlen became a university college with degree granting status in 1995; and has a mandate to develop and offer baccalaureate degrees that will prepare students for well paid, fulfilling careers.
