So when the 23 year old from Mount Pearl, Newfoundland decided to check out the Career Builder Plus Program, she just wanted a resume. What she got were more options, a better idea of the kind of job she was after and the confidence to go out and get it.
“I found I had qualities and options that I never knew I had,“ said White. “I went in there prepared to take what I could get. I realized that I could get more.“

| Morgan White began working as an Office Administrator in July. | White found the Career Builder Plus, a free program offered by the Training Group at Douglas College, gave her the one on one attention she needed to assess her strengths and weaknesses and how her individual interests matched the local labour market. She soon realized she didn‘t have to settle for just any job.
“I thought more of what I wanted to do and what would make me happy, not what others want me to do,“ says White, who graduated from Memorial University in April with her Bachelor of Arts. “I had to do what was right for me and put aside other people‘s preconceptions.“
Career Builder Plus is a free service for people who are unemployed and underemployed (working only 20 hours a week or less). Offered in Coquitlam and Maple Ridge, it features small work groups and a flexible timetable to fit clients‘ schedules.
But what really made the difference for White was the rapport she struck up with her career consultant, Quinn Vosburgh.
“She was great, she wanted the best for me and everyone else in the program,“ says White. “She was very caring and understanding.“
Vosburgh says White‘s experience is a good example of how the program gives clients the tools they need to enter or return to the work force with confidence.
“Knowing what your interests are, what occupations are best suited to your personality, what kind of schools are available and what‘s happening in the labour market helps people make a more informed decision on their chosen career path,“ says Vosburgh.
“The success clients enjoy shows them the benefits of career planning.“
The benefits are quite clear to White, who finished the program in June. With a new sense of purpose and confidence, she landed a job a Hamilton Street Holdings in Vancouver as an Office Administrator in July.
“I love it,“ says White. “There are lots of different challenges every day.“
White says people from all walks of life can benefit from the program.
“Whether you‘re young or old, whether you have post secondary education or not, or you‘re looking to advance another step in life, you should take this program,“ says White.
“It gives you confidence. It helps you see what you‘re suited to-especially if you‘re new to a province. They also keep in touch until you find a job. You‘re not out there on your own.”
