Age: 25

CAREER

Title of occupation: Staff Accountant
Company: Deloitte and Touche
Years at position: Just started
Hours worked each week: Full time
Salary range: $34,000 to $40,000
Salary potential:
Every year, what you do changes. After your designation is obtained, the market is more competitive and other firms become more interested in you. It‘s a significant jump after designation.
Best part of job:
There are a lot of different projects and different companies you work with. It‘s not just about doing journal entries. Eighty per cent of the time, I‘m out of the office with clients. It‘s something people don‘t expect as an accountant. There is a fair bit of traveling to see clients too.
Other possible choices:
Wealth management-stock brokers, ability to manage money in a discretionary manner. With wealth management, you need to build your own list of investors, which is difficult to do and I don‘t know many retirees who would trust a 25 year old with their money. I was also thinking of becoming a Financial Management Advisor.

EDUCATION

Degrees: B Commerce at UVIC (4 years), Diploma in Accounting at Sauder School of Business at UBC (8 months), CFA Level 3, CFP written exam, Canadian Securities Institute designation. I also helped found a DAP student club and was awarded with the Ernst and Young DAP award and the Ellis Foster DAP award for my contribution to the program.
Advice: Do some research. If you are prepared to make the commitment to return to school and get very high marks, then it‘s available to you. It gives you options, and can be fairly rewarding.

LIFESTYLE

Favourite recreational activity: Skiing, golf, almost any sport
Upcoming vacation plans: Catskiing. It looks like a tank, can carry up to 12 people and can go up any hill where there is no ski lift. So I’d like to use that soon. I also did some traveling in Thailand before I started work.
In five years, I see myself enjoying: With my career, I have no idea where I see myself going, but once you‘ve obtained your CA designation, and are working with one of the big firms, it‘s incredibly easy to go anywhere in the world. There are work exchanges where you can go away for a month. The ability to travel and work abroad is definite. In my personal life, I‘d like to be married, have a family and definitely do more traveling.
