A Canadian Taiwanese fan of Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti interrupted the maestro‘s news conference in Taiwan by singing O Sole Mio and asking Pavarotti to accept him as his student.
Chang Pu-he, an amateur Taiwan singer now living in Canada, walked into Pavarotti‘s news conference at the Evergreen Laurel Hotel in Taichung, central Taiwan, to beg Pavarotti to accept him as his student.
Before Pavarotti could respond, Chang, in a loud but not very musical voice, belted out O Sole Mio, but was stopped by Pavarotti‘s sponsors after he had sung for about half a minute.
Claiming to be the “Pavarotti of China,” Chang asked Pavarotti to teach him singing to which Pavarotti did not reply.
Pavarotti arrived in Taichung recently on the last leg of the Asian part of his farewell world tour. He sang to an audience of 20,000 at the Taichung Stadium recently.
After the Taichung concert, Pavarotti plans to fly in his private jet to New York to spend Christmas with his second wife Nicoletta Mantovani, his former secretary 34 years his junior, and their infant daughter Alice.
The Italian opera star plans to retire from singing after finishing his 40 city farewell tour next year.
