Vancouver women redefine sexy with a nine-foot poleFrom sleaze to stylish, pole dancing has twirled out strip bars to the mainstream health fitness scene. From Mounties to lawyers, doctors and other professionals, Vancouver women are stroking and coiling their bodies on a nine-foot long pole, shedding not only excess pounds but also inhibitions about feeling sexy.
"There’s absolutely no nudity. It’s all about women getting a workout in sexy way," says Sharon Goodman, artistic director of the Pole Dance Studio located at the heart of Downtown. Goodman says that pole dancing involves strength training, dance and floor movement. "It builds confidence and it’s feminine." The studio opened mid-way last year and through word-of-mouth, it has built an increasingly multicultural clientele.
"We have Caucasians, Europeans, Asians; you name it, we have it," says Goodman, a Filipino-Canadian. Pole dancing has come a long way from strip joints where strippers made a living slithering up and down a shaft, gaining respectability in fitness studios as an alternative regimen to stay in shape.
"Some of the women who come here say that they want to surprise their husbands or partners. And they learn how to move their hips in a way they’ve never thought of doing before," Goodman says.
