One union, two worlds: Darel & Tania
Wed, November 03 2004
Darrel and Tania met while working at Dairy Queen - the rest was a blizzard.
His name: Darrel James Her name: Tania Gaspar He is 24. She is 25. He is a European Canadian. She is a Filipino Canadian.
He has a college diploma and works as an electrician. She has a highschool diploma and works as the executive assistant to the president of a production/manufacturing/distribution company. He says: "With her side, it's always a huge family thing. It's an overpowering sense of family. They're always around. With my family it's not so exaggerated. But what I love about her culture is the exact same thing. Sometimes I wish my family was more like that. It's the biggest pro and the biggest con. You can always count on her family, even the extended family." He thinks people notice the height difference between them a lot more than race. "Our friends always make jokes about me being 6'3 while she is 4'7; but they never make jokes about race." She says: "I don't like the way people from his culture are so impersonal. They don't even hug." She thinks the older Filipino's look at them in disapproval, while younger Filipino's, especially girls, look at them with envy. "In the Philippines, people think that being Canadian or white is better." On KidsHe says: "I'm not too worried about our biracial kids' future. I think biracial kids are better looking anyway. I just don't want to worry about any daughters." She says: "No I'm not concerned about our kids future." On ParentsHe says: "My dad is just old fashioned. When we started dating he asked me 'are you sure' and also said 'relationships are hard enough, you don't need the extra stresses.' But he treats her like a daughter now. My dad grew up in a different era. He grew up in Kits with a white population. It was a red neck era. New things weren't accepted. Dating interracially was a new idea to a new generation." She says: "My brothers and sisters also married interracially, so my parents were totally fine with it." He won't categorize himself as the type of person who would marry interracially. She won't categorize herself as the type of person who would marry interracially. They just fell in love.
