Trail to Ulu Geroh

Where would you go to view the rafflesia, the world's biggest flower Most people would immediately think of Borneo.

How about Kampung Ulu Geroh?

Where's that?

Ulu Geroh is a little Malaysian village about 12 kilometres from Gopeng, near Ipoh, Perak.

To trek through the jungle to where the rafflesia thrives, you would need to engage the services of a Semai native. There are about 20 known species of rafflesia and 60 types of butterflies in Kampung Ulu Geroh.

The world's largest flower - The Rafflesia

The Rafflesia Cantleyi, whose flowers measure up to 55 centimetres with perigone lobes up to 14 centimetres long and 18 centimetres wide, grows high up in the thick forests of Ulu Geroh. Just to have a look at the rafflesia, that blooms only for a few days, you'd have to climb up a hilly path.

The tour is an eye-opener for those looking for jungle trekking fun, and to view Malaysia's plants and insects.

The area is also filled with hundreds of Rajah Brooke butterflies flitting about in muddy areas of the jungle.

A tour into the area ends with a get-together at the Semai village.

There visitors are entertained with a cultural dance performance and feted to high tea, local style, at the Orang Asli (natives) Club hut.

The United Nations Development Program and General Environment Facility, has been working closely with the Semai Orang Asli community of Ulu Geroh to protect the habitat of the rafflesia and Raja Brooke butterflies since 2002.
