This summer, my son's fiancee was found murdered in Thailand, in the condo of her former boyfriend a Belgian national. There was massive evidence against him and he was soon arrested. He served 17 days in jail before he was released on bail to await trial on charges of murder. In October he obtained a false passport and fled home. Thailand was rife with rumours that the Belgian embassy was involved in his escape.
The Globe and Mail, Vancouver Sun and Vancouver Courier all treated the news as if it belonged only to the Third World and refused to write a word about it. Only the Asian Pacific Post saw the real significance to "the story":http://www.asianpacificpost.com/news/article/227.html of the murder of a working-class Asian woman by a middle-class European man who may never face justice.
