Kwantlen: Competition
Thu, August 25 2005

Kwantlen Bachelor of Applied Design in Fashion Design and Technology degree students had an opportunity to experience Thailand as part of a design competition sponsored by the Hudson's Bay Company.

The Hudson's Bay Company selected students from Kwantlen, as the leading fashion design university in Western Canada, to participate in the silk design competition to showcase the retailer's Experience Thailand event.

With silk generously donated by the Royal Family of Thailand from their personal collection, the students were allowed to design any type of garment. The final pieces were judged on the freshness and skill of the designs, the construction of the garments, and the connection of Thai and Canadian cultures within the piece.

The winning student designers are (from first to third place):

  • Lisa Ludwig, who receives a trip to Thailand
  • Caitlin Tanaka, who receives a $2,000 HBC gift card
  • Cara Sumpton, who receives a $1,000 HBC gift card

The designs are on display on the third floor of the Bay, Vancouver downtown store until Aug. 21, 2005.

According to HBC Outreach Coordinator, Kelly Irwin, "There have already been inquiries as to whether their [the students] garments can be purchased."

Kwantlen University College's mission is to create an exceptional learning environment committed to preparing learners for leadership, service and success. Kwantlen became a university college with degree granting status in 1995; and has a mandate to develop and offer baccalaureate degrees that will prepare students for well paid, fulfilling careers.
