Abbotsford
Abbotsford Mayor
George Ferguson
The City of Abbotsford has begun preparations and planning on flood protection in the Ridgedale area of the Matsqui Prairie. Abbotsford/Clayburn MLA John van Dongen announced yesterday that the Province will fund $1.4 million to improve flood protection in Abbotsford. The work will be carried out by the City. “This funding announcement is great news for the citizens of Abbotsford,” says Mayor George F. Ferguson. “The issue of flood protection is a major concern of all communities along the Fraser River. Abbotsford has extensive frontage along the Fraser River, making it one of the most exposed communities to flood risk. Staff are commencing immediately with design work.” The City has retained Golder Geotechnical Engineers to design and monitor the reinforcement work along the riverbank. Surrey
Animal lovers gala

Surrey Mayor
Dianne Watts
Last year our ‘Raise Your Paws’ event raised over $14,000 for needy animals in Surrey. City Mayor Dianne Watts said that these funds have gone a long way towards increasing awareness of the plight of animals in our community and to helping find ‘forever homes’ for the thousands of abandoned animals who come into our shelter’s care each year. Ultimately, we could not raise these much-needed funds without the generosity and support of local people and businesses. This year’s event will provide a romantic and fun evening out for couples and animal lovers alike. The evening will feature a cocktail hour with cash bar and butler-style appetizers, full dinner and dessert, silent and live auction, live entertainment, games, prizes, and more. On Sat Feb 9  5pm at Surrey Arts Centre. Call 604.501.5566 or see: www.surrey.ca. for info.

Vancouver
Vancouver remembered

Vancouver Mayor
Sam Sullivan
Artist and writer Michael Kluckner is the winner of the 2007 City of Vancouver Book Award for his work Vancouver Remembered (Whitecap Books), which reveals layers of changing colour and light in Vancouver’s evolving neighbourhoods. Mayor Sam Sullivan presented the $2,000 award to Whitecap Books’ publisher Robert McCullough, who accepted on Kluckner’s behalf during a Vancouver City Council meeting. An independent jury cited Kluckner’s stand-out work for its meticulous research and ability to paint a complex picture of Vancouver’s social histories, architecture and design.
