A performance of passion: Punjabi/Hindi dance and song
Thu, February 21 2008

Raji Basi

Her passion for choreographing and dancing to Punjabi and Hindi songs, has led her to appear on local variety shows and for television programs.

Born in the Punjab State of India, Raji Basi moved to Canada at seven-years-old.  She is a self-taught dancer and has been working with Puente Theatre for seven years starring in the productions Storytelling Our Lives, Story Mosaic, Juan Terra El Immigrante and many others.

Basi is an emerging playwright recently having written and performed a one-woman play, Uthe/Athe (There/Here), depicting her search for identity while being raised in Canada by traditional East Indian parents.

The play has proven a major success earning three runs in Victoria and garnering wide interest regionally, nationally, and potentially, internationally.

The play chronicles the immigrant experience and has the power to speak to audiences of all ages and offers a unique opportunity to engage the viewer in an intercultural perspective.
Basi with Grace Salez plays in the film Ceremony of Death, about a young Indian girl’s first experience with a death ceremony conducted by the older women of her community.

Local filmmakers and traditional oral storytellers have partnered to bring Victoria an exciting, one night only, live performance of stories from around the world.

CineVic: Society of Independent Filmmakers and PUENTE Theatre are proud to present collaborations which features the work of filmmakers who have used a variety of mediums including animation, 16mm film and experimental video to illuminate the visions of contemporary and traditional stories spanning the Philippines, Tanzania and India.

Interwoven with tellings of “Four Dragons”, a story from China and “Lake Eim” an Estonian story from the epic Kalevala, Scene+Heard promises to be a unique and moving event.

Scene+Heard -- art + storytelling - Feb 22nd. An evening of multicultural collaboration between media artists and traditional oral storytellers. For further information or to schedule interviews with any of the artists contact Bryan Skinner at 604-389-1590, or email him at director@cinevic.ca
