Learn moves of Polynesian dance

Polynesian-dance The Langley Ukulele Ensemble and Kauhane Polynesian Dancers, two Metro Vancouver companies that have toured world-wide and collaborate on performances that bring audiences a synergy of live music and dance, will perform at Ron Basford Park, Granville Island on July 20 at 2 p.m. The performance is part of the All Over The Map dance and music series presented by New Works.

The Langley Ukulele Ensemble has been enriching lives since 1980 with virtuosic and inspiring music, harmonizing the ukulele with choral strength. The Kauhane Polynesian Dancers celebrate their proud heritage by performing both ancient and modern forms of Polynesian Island dances. Renowned for highly entertaining performances, these two companies team up to share their spirit of the Pacific.

Now in its fifth year, All Over the Map’s six free performances take place on Granville Island in July and August. Every performance showcases a characteristic blend of live dance and music from around the world. The series is a treat for dance and music fans, families and passers-by alike. All Over the Map performances have been known to get audiences moving.

The performances are free, and are moved inside at Performance Works in case of rain.

New Works presents dance that is sometimes wacky, mostly unpredictable and always enjoyable. Bhangra, ballet, aerial dance, martial arts, hip hop and dances from around the world are a few examples of shows and workshops. The group offers innovative performance series, educational workshops for families and individuals, and a valuable mentoring program for emerging arts companies and administrators.

New Works is supported by CMHC Granville Island, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the British Columbia Arts Council, the BC Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch and the City of Vancouver.
