Fashions to fight violence
Wed, September 24 2008
SCRAP will take place Oct. 26 in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside at Centre A. This year’s show focuses on the issues of Filipino women both in Canada and abroad who face all forms of violence. Volunteers are needed to help in the preparation of this cultural event to expose the reality of many Filipino women’s lives. “The issue of violence against women has been ongoing for the PWC for many years,” says Niki Silva of PWC. “Through gathering the women’s experiences, we found there are many Filipino women, some coming to Canada through the Live-In Caregiver Program (LCP) of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, who are victims of various forms of violence.” Designs featured at the show will be inspired by the stories of the women who have been abused or are still facing abuse. “By taking the feelings that the stories of domestic workers evoke, we will present them visually in a form of fashion,” says Denise Valdecantos of PWC. Leah Diana, also a member of PWC, noted that without the help of volunteers, “putting on such a political fashion show would not be possible.” “Efforts help forward the work of PWC so Filipino victims of violence can continue to seek support and assistance,” says Diana. Members and supporters of the Filipino community are urged to volunteer by attending meetings and getting involved to learn about the current situation and provide support for victims. Volunteers are also welcome to stop by the Kalayaan Centre at 451 Powell Street. What: SCRAP: A Political Fashion Show to Stop Violence Against Filipino Women.
