hemant There is another ugly side to the terror attack on the financial capital of India. The Mumbai attack claimed the life of a police officer who was branded an “anti Hindu” by the Hindu nationalist BJP and its allies for investigating a series of bombings allegedly carried out by Hindu extremists in September.
Hemant Karkare was the Chief of the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the state Maharashtra Police. He died after being shot through the chest in a violent confrontation with the terrorist gunmen last week.
The ATS had arrested at least 10 suspects in connection with the September blasts, including a serving Lt. Colonel of the Indian Army.
Karkare not only came under attack for heading the investigation from the Hindu nationalist BJP, the major opposition party of India, but also from other Hindu fundamentalist groups.

He was branded an anti-Hindu and portrayed as anti-national.
The BJP was particularly upset at the way his investigation exposed a network of “Hindu terrorism.”
Before that, the bombings were quickly blamed on Islamic extremist groups.
Karkare was upset during the last days of his life because of these allegations. Today, he is a hero in the eyes of the very same people who questioned his integrity and allegiance to India.
The BJP Chief Minister for Gujarat province, Narendra Modi, announced Rs. 1 crore (C$250,000) as a posthumous reward to Karkare. The policeman’s widow, however, refused to accept the money.
The way Karkare was treated by the BJP reflects its hypocrisy and bias. The party is comfortable linking Islam with terrorism falls to a double standard when someone exposes extremism within the Hindu ranks.

Karkare had to sacrifice his life to win the party’s heart.
Meanwhile, Islamic terrorism in India can be partly attributed to excesses perpetuated by Hindu nationalists. In 1992, the BJP reportedly incited Hindu mobs to demolish an ancient mosque. That incident sparked Hindu-Muslim riots and a series of bombings in Mumbai.
Subsequently, thousands of Muslims were killed in Gujarat in 2002 by Hindu mobs that enjoyed the protection of the Modi government.
The Islamic extremists who retaliated were arrested and tried under severe anti-terror laws, whereas no such law was ever applied against the Hindu extremist groups.
The BJP should stop indulging in fanatical politics, and should let the police follow the rule book and treat all the criminals alike, be they Hindu, Muslim or members of any other cultural group.
