Asia’s obsession with white skin leaves a black mark

The manager of the restaurant where Panya Boonchun in Makham Khu Thailand worked simply told her she was fired.

The cream that she applied to her face and neck was supposed to transform her into a white-skinned beauty, the kind she saw on page after page in women’s magazines and on television.

But rather than lighten her complexion, the illegally produced lotion she bought in a local grocery store near this village in southeastern Thailand disfigured her skin into an unsightly patchwork of albino pink and dark brown, a condition that doctors say might be irreversible.

At a time when whiter skin is being aggressively marketed across Asia as beautiful and healthy, Panya’s case illustrates the lengths that some women will go to change their complexions - and the dangers that this sometimes entails, reports the International Herald Tribune

The vast selections of skin-whitening creams on supermarket and pharmacy shelves are testament to an industry that has flourished over the past decade, with 4 out of 10 women in Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan now using a skin-whitening cream, a survey conducted by Synovate, a market research company, found.

The skin-whitening craze, which runs parallel to the global trend of cosmetic surgery and botox injections, is not just for the face. It includes creams that whiten darker patches of skin in armpits and "pink nipple" lotions that bleach away brown-colored pigment.

Women buy sunscreen creams to wear to the office in case they are struck by stray rays while commuting, the modern equivalent of the huge parasols that servants once carried to shield their masters from the intense Asian sun.

And while many if not most skin-whitening creams are safe, doctors, consumer groups and government officials are reporting dangerous consequences of the white-is- beautiful trend: Instead of treating blemishes, women are applying potent creams in large and harmful doses.

Inexpensive black-market products with powerful but illegal bleaching agents are also selling briskly throughout the poorer parts of south and Southeast Asia. "I have a lot of complaints - with photographs - which show that before the cream is used the face is fine and then after it looks like it’s been roasted in the oven," said Darshan Singh, the manager for Malaysia’s National Consumer Complaints Center, a non-profit group in Kuala Lumpur.

Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration has published a list of 70 skin- whitening creams circulating illegally around the country. Indonesian officials have identified more than 50 banned cosmetics.

But there are also questions about legitimate creams. Some doctors say that hydroquinone, prescribed for years by dermatologists around the world to remove blemishes, may be cancerous, especially if used over an extended period of time in large doses.

Hydroquinone, which is also used in photo processing materials, has been shown to cause leukemia in mice and other animals. The European Union banned the ingredient from cosmetics in 2001 but it remains widely available in prescription drugs or in bootleg creams in many parts of the developing world.

It is also sold in the United States as an over-the-counter drug with potency of less than two percent.

Two doctors recently published an article in a European medical journal last year calling the long-term side effects of hydroquinone-based creams a "potential time bomb."

ociologists have long debated why Asians, who are divided by everything from language to religion to ethnicity, share a deeply held cultural belief that lighter skin is more attractive.

One commonly repeated rationale is that a lighter complexion is associated with wealth and higher education levels because those from lower social classes, laborers and farmers, are exposed to the sun and thus have darker complexions.

Another theory is linked to the waves of lighter-skinned conquerors, the Moguls from Central Asia or the colonizers from Europe, whose complexions became the standard for attractiveness.

"The success of the skin whiteners signifies that the Western concept of beauty in terms of skin color has finally seeped down to the lower classes," said Randy David, a sociologist at the University of the Philippines.

Nithiwadi Phuchareuyot, a doctor at a skin clinic in Bangkok who dispenses products and treatments to lighten skin, said: "Every Thai girl thinks that if she has white skin the money will come and the men will come.

"The movie stars are all white-skinned, and everyone wants to look like a superstar."

In Thailand, as in other countries in the region, the stigma of darker skin is rooted in language. One common insult is "tua dam," or black body, a rude term to degrade someone of lower social standing. Along the same lines are "e dam" (black girl) or "dam tap pet" (black like a duck’s liver).

Films and advertising also clearly have a role in promoting the idea that whiter skin is more beautiful. The runaway success of South Korean soap operas across the region has made its lighter- skinned stars emblems of Asian beauty.

Advertisements for skin-whitening products promote whiter skin as glowing and healthier. Olay, a popular brand, has a product called "white radiance." L’Oréal markets products called "white perfect."

In a survey carried out in June 2004 by Synovate, 61 percent of respondents in Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan said they felt they looked younger with a fair complexion. Half of Filipino women, 45 percent of Hong Kong women and 41 percent of Malaysian women said they were currently using a skin-whitening product.

There are small groups of people in Asia who seem to prefer tanned skin. In Japan, young women commonly referred to as "Shibuya girls," after the Tokyo neighborhood they hang out in, have been regular patrons of tanning salons for a decade.

But they are an asterisk in Japanese society and indeed in Asia over all.

"Everybody else basically wants white skin," said Leeyong Soo, the international fashion coordinator at Vogue Nippon, the Japanese edition of the fashion magazine.

"People might say to you when you come back from a holiday, ‘Oh you have a tan.’ But it’s not necessarily complimentary."

Last year 62 new skin-whitening products were introduced in supermarkets or pharmacies across the Asia-Pacific region, according to Datamonitor, a market research firm, accelerating a trend that has seen an average of 56 new products introduced annually over the past four years.

These products work in various ways. Some are based on active ingredients like hydroquinone, mulberry extract, licorice extract, kojic acid or arbutin, and they inhibit the formation of melanin, or skin pigment. Others are acids that remove old skin.

The most effective but risky skin-bleaching agents are often the least expensive, like hydroquinone, which sells for about $20 per kilogram, compared to highly concentrated licorice extract, which sells for about $20,000 a kilo.

Last year, Wiete Westerhof, a dermatologist who founded the Netherlands Institute for Pigment Disorders in Amsterdam, and T.J. Kooyers, a Dutch chemist, wrote a commentary in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology calling for more research into the hazardous side effects of hydroquinone.

"All recent evidence from the literature indicates that the use of hydroquinone as a skin lightening agent should be stopped completely," Westerhof and Kooyers wrote. "We are of the opinion that it is a potential time bomb."

Doctors, some of whom have stopped prescribing hydroquinone, say it remains one of the most widely used chemicals to bleach skin.

"It’s very, very commonly used," said Anil Ganjoo, a dermatologist in New Delhi and the president of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists. "Almost every anti-pigment treatment uses hydroquinone."

Thada Piamphongsant, the president of the Thai Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Surgery, said he believed that about half of all Thai dermatologists prescribe creams with hydroquinone. He stopped prescribing it a decade ago when he noticed patients with redness and itching and with more serious side effects like ochronosis, the appearance of very dark patches of skin that are difficult to remove.

Some patients also develop leukoderma, where the skin loses the ability to produce pigment, resulting in patches of pink like those on Panya’s face and neck.

When Panya first began using the cream, which was packaged under the name "3 Days" and cost the equivalent of US$1, she said she was very happy with the results.

Her skin started itching, but she tolerated it because her complexion lightened considerably. Customers in the restaurant where she sang Thai folk songs gave her bigger tips, she said.

But when her face became blotchy, two months after she began using the cream, her life fell apart. Her boss told her she could no longer sing at the restaurant because she was unsightly.

Today she is broke and broken- hearted.

"I never look in the mirror anymore," she said, sobbing during an interview with the Tribune.

Last month, she told her story on a Thai television program, breaking down as she described how she lost her job and ruined her face.

Just before she was introduced, the announcer on the program ran through a list of the show’s sponsors, including a cream called "White Beauty."

"Use this cream," the announcer said. "It gives you expert treatment."

everyone is different and color should not be an issue, more on the features, asians have flat features and have less curves even though they are light skinned. girls with darker skin (especially brazil, carribean) are dark but they are very pretty with big eyes, sharp noses and full lips, nice curvy body. these asians are so dumb . i have very white skin id love to tan/brown skin anyday!

i don't agree or disagree with this article. i'm chineese and my skin isn't dark or light but i know that in china we've always thought whiter skin is attractive not because we want to copy americans thats just how it's always been. i like my skin the way it is and although i'd prefer to be lighter rather than darker i'm not going to risk damaging my skin by buying a whitening cream i simply use sunscreen to keep it the way it is.

In America, Asians, particularly the Japanese, are seen as highly intelligent and extremely beautiful. Americans will purchase things with Japanese on them, or things from Japan or related to Japanese culture, just because Japanese = cool. People think it is so cool to be able to say something in Japanese. Just yesterday, I heard a group of girls shouting "Nihao!" on the bus. (They got the intonation wrong). I have lived in both New York State and Oregon, and this is true in both states, on both sides of the United States.
My poor dear, *everyone* wants to be Asian.
I am also curious as to where you have procured the notion that "a lot of [Asians] are darker than black people". This is really, really not true. Not only are you saying that there is only one shade of "black", but that this shade is lighter than some Asian skin tones. Some Africans have skin so dark it is purple. I find it quite beautiful and captivating, and you should look up pictures of them. Although it is true that they are perhaps the outliers, it is still true that "black" people are most certainly darker than Asian people. I would recommend that you travel to many different countries before you ever open your mouth and vomit bigoted ramblings ever again. Also, the entirety of the internet would be grateful if you learn to use the 'shift' key. It creates capital letters. Capital letters are to be used in the first letter of a sentence, and in proper nouns--names of people, places, books, etc. Your comment ought to read: "I am just thinking that this photograph might be photoshopped. Are you clinically insane, or are you just that ignorant and racist? I am an asian american (vietnamese, to be exact), and I am extremely proud of my race. I have a natural olive-tan complexion, and I do not strive to be black or white (which is the race I'm assuming you are). For you to think that every asian wants to be like you is truely sickening. Although I never understood why asian women in japan and china lighten their skintones, I never lost sleep over it either (which I'm sure you are doing, bc you're pathetic). Bottom line: who cares? What I am sure of is that they do not do it to imitate the western culture. They lighten their skin tones because they always get teased by their friends and even their family. I'm a singaporean and my race is chinese. I have a tanned skin color and my i always get comments like ,"oh, you're so dark! You ca go and be a muslim!"(the malays in singapore are mostly muslims and somes stupid people think muslim is a race!). Some friends who are very tanned hate getting these kind of comments that really hurt their feelings. My mom jokes to other people that i'm not her real daughter because i'm very dark from swimming. I think i have a good complextion since i dun have acne, and i love my tanned skin sooo much that i stopped using my whitening product. In asian societies, keeping pale is valued and a girl with pale skin is always seen as prettier than a girl with tanned skin. When i told my mom that some white people go to salons to get a tan, she thought they were crazy. Many chinese perceive pale complextions as beautiful probably cos many female deities have very pale complextions. Right now, my skin doesn't tan as well as before but gets kind of red after being exposed to the sun(all becuz of stupid whitening cream) but i don't look pale. so i use sunscreen to prevent sunburn. White Asians...

This was a hot topic while I was in China.
Let me say I am a man who never ceased to be surprised learning things women do with make-up in any culture.
Like many Caucasian men I have some colour-blindness and interestingly the only colour I see perfectly is actually yellow. Then again, my one 'pure colour' perception doesn't seem to work well on human skin though which is not quite a 'true yellow' on anyone,
but,
I did notice that many Chinese do have a 'gold' complexion yet some in Beijing were actually nearly 'whiter than white people' (who usually have some yellow too).
I assumed (just like any peoples) this was just natural variations or that some of these young gals were from a different asian ethnicity.
She giggled a bit and told me to look closer at the young women's face and neck. To my surprise the next 'paper white' young lady had a yellow neck behind her ear.
So she explained how this is skin-bleaching and/or skin cremes.
Now here is the historical interpretation:
- The poorer the peasant the more rice-farming she did. The more the labouring class the more the wife worked 16 hours a day in summer sun until sunburnt as dark as skin can get.
The more ruling class, upper-class or wealthier the more time you spent inside and under expensive silk umbrellas.
You get the idea. So our porcelain 'China doll' is the pale white princess. That is the privileged 'Barbie' in China's history.

Compare this to Caucasian cultures in more recent times. The 'Red Neck' is associated with the prairie farmers, share-croppers and working classes.
Or,
Going the other way - a golden tan being associated with those wealthy enough to take vacations in winter. Its a sign you were high-class jet set and spent time in the French Riviera. A family with glowing bronze tans shows off the families vacation to Mexico or Las Vegas. The darker the tan is the more time, money, days off allowed from work (higher seniority).

Now back to the 'white status' in Chinese (and mainly women) and here was the second explanation my guide gives:
- Caucasian look is 'in'. This is more to do with an emerging economy wanting to emulate or move towards what they see in the western films, magazines, and think of as 'wealthy cultures'.
Brown-eyed brunette Caucasian girls want to look like Britney or Jessica (whoever is the big stars) and so do young brunette Asian girls hip to the newest western stars.

What really did amaze me was not so much the young women in white make-up.. something Caucasian teens might do for a 'Goth look',
but,
to see billboards, magazines and television imagines where a sort of 'yellow filter' is used so that all people have a 'white' tone devoid of yellow tints.
In fact, this is even true in 'skin-whitening creme' TV adverts where the 'before model' is already devoid of yellow skin even before she shows herself lightening.

But here is some thoughts on this:
- When we see Caucasian women, English, Canadian.. using hair straighteners (another thing I was amazed to learn women do all the time) straightening their hair and applying 'bronzing creme' (yellow tint really) and use pencils to 'sharp' the corners of their eyes (common) do we say that white women are 'Trying to look Asian'?
Do we say they must want to be Chinese?
Or do we suppose they want to look 'Wealthy' and are emulating the effects one might have vacationing in a sunny and dry climate... so as to show 'elite status'?
If the same Caucasian Englishwoman perms her hair, dyes is darker.. is she 'trying to be more black' too?
You see what I am saying here?

Another thought. Here is maybe the case of 'art imitating life imitating art..' and this is now seeing the 'beauty perception' from another angle:
- As a boy I would watch Japanese Kung Fu movies with great infatuation. Often the representation of a beautiful woman was the Geisha with her painted-white face. This was the romantic model of the beautiful woman. By the time I (a Caucasian male) reached adulthood that image of jet-black hair and white face is embedded in my psyche as 'Beauty'.
So when I would see these young tall Chinese women with white make-up I am quick to look and say "Wow.. how beautiful!".
But here is the twist - I am NOT associating her white-face with 'western beauty' at all but in fact, I am seeing 'Asian exotic beauty' in that white make-up as interpreted in my western mind.
Do you see what I am saying here - the 'white face' I perceive as being ASIAN beauty and not Caucasian beauty.

Personally, I think my wife looks perfect with her natural Chinese skin tones and natural hair colour (in fact I think that for most any woman in the world of any type) and now that I see something about this product being dangerous I would all the more discourage her from using 'whiteners'.

I'd leave you with this though.. just if you think skin-whitening in Asia is a bizarre thing then just think about this...
...not too long ago it was the highest level of fashion, appearance and social status for not just women but MEN in Europe to 'powder the face' until appearing as white ghost and even to do the same with large white wigs on top of it all lol!
But hey.. wow a few hundred years ago we just thought we looked fantastic and great that way lol!

The myth of Asian beauty concepts

I think 98% of Westerners do not seem to understand about what beauty really means to Asians in Asia. There're a lot of myths about how Asian see whiter skin. Natural beauty is what Asian always seek after and view as beautiful. There're many ugly brown skinned Asian and many ugly white skinned Asian simply they don't have beautiful face. Same in Western countries, there're many ugly American, ugly European, ugly African, ugly Latinos, there're many beautiful ones out there certainly. Colors CANNOT determine someone as pretty or ugly, we subconsciously do know the difference between beautiful and ugly people. There're many other elements must be put together to make a person's face more beautiful than the others or stand out. Although beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, there're some standard in what's being called beautiful. To most people in Asia, it's the Proportion and Condition. And Asian people do think Whiteness can cover up the flaws and ugliness of a person, therefore, maket the person less ugly or simply prettier. I must make a point here thatte picture of the Korean Actress shown here isn't her best photo, she doesn't look that pretty as in other photos that showing her radiant look under her white healthy looking skin. However, she's considered a natural beauty, someone doesn't need make up for the cover up!!!

The one thing I notice since I moved into Asia that until today Asian in mass majority still aren't able to distinguish the differences between beautiful face and attractiveness of a girl. They can't understand the both because of the mind-set culture that beautiful and attractive only depend on the facial structure of a person, so they leave out the personality and confidence to last among all elements which supposed to make a person beautiful.

So, when talking about beautiful face. Truth is, how many Asian women out there are a Natural Beauty Bomb? Only 5% I think. And truth is, majority of Asian people's facial structure are not proportional. Especially that most girls I have seen in the Southeast DO NOT have the elements meet the category of beauty club in Asia. That is, everything on the face from hair to toes must be Well- conditioned and Proportional. Westerners saw something in Asia, then made a conclusion without truly understand how Asian really see things, they just throw a phrase saying Asia people like white skinned people. This is NOT true!! Asian people in modern times especially the ones from wealthier countries /cities like Japan, Hong Kong Seoul, Singapore,Taipei see colors differently than the poor Asians from Southeast Asia because of the education and knowledge levels.

People from the wealthy neighborhoods care about the skin condition and even tone of complexion more than colors. Truth is, Pale looking skin is NOT considered beautiful whether it'd be Pale White, or Pale Brown. If you don't have PINKISH/RADIANT underneath your skin, you're just average, "AVERAGE" Asian girls aren't that pretty is true though. I'm an Asian myself, this is really the honest thing for Asain to say. But I can undersatnd why Westerners think Asian girls are prettier, it's just the matter of not seeing enough Asian people to compare. I remember when I first met white people, when I was 7 years old, I thought all white people are good looking. Until I moved to the States as a teenager, I started seeing the differences and found what I used to think as good looking is totally false as I saw more then I could tell the difference.So for majority of Southeast Asian girls live in Asia and have not been to the West think all White people are good looking, and they think all White men are handsome at some point. And we know that's not true. Same a Western man who hasn't been exposed to other cultures other than his own will find Asian girls all prettier.. So what I was seeing the scene in Southeast Asia is, many ugly White men couple with many ugly Asian women. They think of each other the most beautiful thing, well good for them. But once you have seen a lot, you start to compare. People just travel briefly in Asia and live for a short period of time cannot really see the true differences either. If you don't grow up in Asia or at least live in that country for over 10 years, you can't see the truth, usually the ugly truth.

So, let say if an Asian girl has white skin, light skin, fair skin whatever you call it, her skin complexion must contain some pinkish/peachy tone underneath in ordered to be considered beautiful and healthy. Most Asian men don't think PALE is pretty on a woman either. Pale is never beautiful to anyone though. Now regarding Dark Skin, Black Skin whatever you call it. Same, it depends greatly on the EVENNESS and facial proportion in order to be viewed as good looking too just like all lighter skinned people. When an Asian girl is very dark, but her skin tone is even without flaws ( like no acne, spots, facial hair, small molds etc) meaning, her natural skin looks like airbrushed, that's considered pretty.
#1- Skin complexion and smoothness condition ( pink and smooth as babies)
#2- Facial structure/shape and proportion, nothing TOO big, too small ( like nose and eyes), Shape and distance between eyes must be just right.
#3- Hair condition. Must be full, silky black as mink black. Must be well trimmed and conditioned. Long but thin hair is not desirable.
#4- Shape and full eyebrows are important.
#5- Size of mouth and moderate fullness of lips.
#6- Ear lopes shape and size
#7- Length of neck and its thickness
#8- The bone of the shoulder
#9- Shape of forehead and width - ape looking forehead is not considered pretty.
#10- Shape of head - not too big, too small, too round, too flat, too whatever....

Asian are in general very specific in terms of what is beautiful to them. Everything must be proportioned and just right here. But how many Asian girls in Southeast Asia you will find what I describe here? VERY FEW!! Most Asian in Southeast don't have these natural gifts, most women's hair not silky smooth like black mink, although very long, and their hair not trimmed regularly, the condition of hair isn't healthy looking at all. And the skins not even, pale underneath the brown is worst! Take Korea for example, a girl must have all the followings to be considered beautiful: Black silky Hair, Pink Cheek under White Skin, White teeth and pink lips, proportioned distance between eyes and thick brows as black as hair with distinctive shape, moderate size and thickness of mouth and lips, moderate size of nose. And the reason average Asian girls want to have nose jobs done because most do not have the proportional elements on their facial structure to make them in the beauty club, and nose being in the center of a face which affects the proportion of a face, it can make a person pretty and ugly. So that's why many Westerners get a nose job too. But when Asian people get a nose job, people say they want to look like Westerners, I think Asian people see how the size of a nose can affect their looks, it's all about making them prettier based on the proportional theory.

After all, it's not the colors. It's the condition and proportion.

Goodness sakes....out of either tanning or whitening...Tanning is the worst...giving urself a high risk of deadly skin cancer.... and not all whitening products are bad....most are actually good for ur skin.....as with all skin products you should research the type of chmicals you are putting on your face... people wil always complain and blame hese things when actually most of it is their own fault....for not realizing things they are allergic to may be in these products or not being smart enough to buy the products that don't bleach your skin.... don;t blame asians for wanting the original asian look....because the reason why most asians are darker is from hard labour out in farms and in the sun....its not about discrimination....
its the same as tanning or changing your hair colour....

Asians look better and more natural in their normal skin tones, which is not bleached white. I feel sorry for those who cannot come to terms with reality and be themselves in their own skin. It is Asians whos complexion is bronzey yellow jst how Beyonce and other Americans desire their complexions to be. Even we Latinos tan our skin or lighten it to become Golden in color. Why do we allow ourselves (people of color) black, latino, asian, etc. allow white society to decide what the standard of beauty is. Well I'm chinese and in my family I've seen my mum using bleaching cream on her skin and when everytime I get a tan (I get tanned easily) people tell me not to go out into the sun anymore you look like a piece of charcoal. So I started bleaching my own skin but I realized I'm never gonna have a pale complexion like all the others cause I tan easily so I didn't bother anymore. But having white skin is part of the chinese culture and it symbolizes beauty we have a saying that is... having white skin covers all flaws <- (something like that) And no this have nothing to do with the media it has been like this for centuries. (Before chinese people even met a white person and has never seen a black person)

Japanese- same thing it has nothing to do with the media it is the culture -> geishas wearing thick white powder.

Just a shame

The efforts by cosmetics companies to make people feel ugly and unsatisfied with their natural skin color is just disgusting.

Selling products that improve people's lives is perfectly acceptable, but creating artificial demand for products by first insulting a person's natural appearance and then providing the expensive and sometimes dangerous solution to their "problem" is just wrong.

Stupid trend

It doesn't matter what colour your skin is, if you don't have the nicely proportioned facial features you'll be ugly anyway. Most Asians are born with naturally pale skin anyway. I am Vietnamese and my skin has always been pale since birth. It's pale with a yellow undertone. Though I think my eyes stand out better whenever I tan.

A note about hydroquinone

I feel desperately sorry for the woman in question. I wish I could do something to help her. Im a fair skinned redhead and my parents were vigilant about keeping me out of the sun, but you cant watch kids all the time, and one day when I was twelve I went out and got sunburnt, mainly on my face and especially around my eyes/cheekbones. Im twenty five now, and thirteen years on the effects are visible; yellowy freckles and creases under my eyesockets and at the corners when I smile. I vowed that I'd drink more water, take Omega 3 and a collagen supplement, wear sunscreen every day and lighten the hyper pigmentation caused by sunburn using a hydroquinone based cream that I bought on the net from the US company Paulas Choice. The company has a EU and a US site, and I soon found out why. It burned the goddam face off me. I was raw and red and my skin was HOT to touch, like I'd been sunburned all over again. Ive. stopped using it and just bought a different foundation that covers my freckles and evens my skin tone. That stuff is banned in the EU for a REASON!! Now I just use their SPF 30 spray- the best sunblock in the world, yet strangely still only available on their US site.

In the end, like everything else in this world, it's all about money and pressure. No one is ever going to be happy, because such is the power of the media. I'm extremely white faced. Does that automatically make me feel like I fit in? Nope. People tell me I look sick, I need more color in my cheeks, I need a tan, I need to wear brighter clothes...the list goes on. I'm from the Philippines and people here are so obsessed w/ white skin. However, I love my beautiful brown skin and I'm proud of it since lots of Americans complimented me on it when I visited the US before. I think I look mixed and exotic because of it and I don't wanna look like an ordinary light skinned asian (no offense) No skin color is superior! Every skin tone is beautiful i their own way. I hope that you people get that in your psyches.
