Education Liu is entering her fourth year in mechanical engineering at UBC.


Job:

Engineering co-op student for Power Smart Engineering Commercial Team in the Customer Care and Conservation Department for BC Hydro.




How she got her job?  Liu heard of the opportunity from a friend within the company and applied through the university’s co-op department.


What happens in a typical day?  The Customer Care and Conservation Department’s mandate is to moderate and reduce B.C.’s consumption of energy. Liu is currently programming a spreadsheet to gather building data to assess if certain buildings have the potential conservation measures. "The spreadsheet will be a very useful tool to help decide which power smart program will help which buildings," explains Liu. "I also go on site visits to inspect the lighting system within different buildings, which eases the workload of my team members."


What is your favourite part of the job?  "I’m very passionate about conservation, and being involved in a department with values that are in line with my own is very rewarding," says Liu. "Also, BC Hydro really cares about its employees. When I need more variety, I just communicate that to my supervisor . They’re very open. My duties are varied."
