Careers in Fashion & Design: Danielle Gillis

Name: Danielle Gillis
Age: 25
Title: Fashion producer/coordinator

CAREER

Occupation: I work part-time as events producer with Honey Mustard Fashion Services. I also freelance as a fashion coordinator. In addition to these, I am also a volunteer at Fashion High, a not-for-profit organization helping designers who use sustainable materials.

Company: The Honey Mustard Fashion Services

Hours worked per week: It’s on a part-time basis. I do a lot of working from home and working on actual events. I can be all over the place.

Salary range: Starting wage is $10 per hour. I have also done jobs for a flat rate and for these, it’s always negotiated.

Salary potential: It depends on the event. A big event could get you a bigger rate.

Best part of the job: Being creative. It’s always the same process but with different results. Just coming up with different events and taking events outside is kind of fun.

EDUCATION

School: John Casablancas Institute

Diploma: Fashion arts program

Grad year: March 2005

Length of program: It’s a 10-month program.

Work Placement: John Casablancas gave us a lot of advice. They coached us how to set a portfolio, for one. When I was done with the program, one of the designers whom we worked with asked me and a couple of classmates to help coordinate a fashion show. So I started putting shows after graduations. Then more calls started coming in.

Other career options: There are so many areas to go into. One is styling. Or publicity work like writing press releases for shows. I also like merchandizing and visual display.

Advice: Keep on top of school work, have a positive attitude. Just be outgoing. Keep on networking.

LIFESTYLE

Favourite activity: I like bike riding and hiking outdoors. I usually get inspiration outdoors. I’d be up in bike trails in North Vancouver. I keep active all the time to keep up because the fashion industry is a very active industry.

Upcoming vacation plans: I’d like to travel and experience different cultures and take in the fashion and lifestyle scene there. I’d love to go to Europe. Europe is the first place in the map where I want to go to. In Europe one can get into the fashion capitals and experience firsthand what is like to be at the top

In five years: I see myself probably doing same thing. I like being part of fashion coordination. I’d like to see Vancouver become a fashion capital. I also like to have a yearly fashion show and perhaps open a boutique.
