Local filmmaker explores the ‘Canadian Dream’

A new movie “Canadian Dream” by Vancouver-area filmmaker Manmord Sidhu explores an immigrant’s harrowing foray into an underworld of organized crime.
The movie is based on a true story. It runs against a backdrop of the community’s ongoing entanglement with the world of organized crime.
The film centers on Amar Dhillon (Vic Parmar), a native of India who envisions a better life as an immigrant to Canada. Joined by his beautiful wife Simran Dhillon (Preet Cheema), Amar sets out on a journey in a new world filled with ambitious hopes and dreams.
But that optimistic future encounters a considerable challenge when Amar unexpectedly loses his job at a nearby mill, triggering uncertainty and panic about the family’s prospects for success.
Trouble at home and with the law, Amar finds his life spiraling in the wrong direction.
With no home, no job, and no family to confide in, his path for personal redemption dovetails down an ominous path.
A casual encounter with a middle-aged man leads to contacts and opportunities with a new family that operates within the drug trade. Amar’s fate it would seem is sealed.
“I wanted to illustrate through Amar’s life the decisions that immigrants make and the importance of getting connected with the right people,” Sidhu said. “Amar’s participation in the drug trade attests to how difficult it is to leave that type of lifestyle.”
Filmed exclusively in Vancouver and Surrey, award-winning actress Balinder Johal headlines a talented roster of supporting cast members by reprising the role of Amar’s unforgiving, tenacious mother-in-law. Industry veteran Poonam Sandhu plays the part of Sonia, an accomplice to the
narcotics network.
Surrey resident Manmord Sidhu immigrated to Canada from India and graduated from Vancouver Film School. In addition to founding White Hill Production, Sidhu previously worked in Bollywood movie productions as an assistant director and has directed music videos and commercials.
