Programs help new Canadians access trades

The Industry Training Authority’s Immigrants in Trades Training initiative, funded through the Canada British Columbia Labour Market Agreement, helps skilled New Canadians who are unemployed or employed and low-skilled overcome barriers to gaining Canadian certification and entering the trades.
The new academic year is fast approaching. Soon thousands of British Columbians will be heading back to school, some of whom will be starting on the path to a career in the trades. Now is the time to become certified in a trade and take advantage of the exciting opportunities that BC has to offer.
B.C.’s economy is poised to be driven forward for years with jobs in construction; mining, oil and gas; energy and utilities; and more. The BC Labour Market Outlook 2010-2020 estimates that by 2020 one in ten job openings in BC will be in trade occupations.
To meet this demand BC is working to empower groups underrepresented in the trades such as skilled New Canadians – those who have the technical skills from their home countries, but because of cultural, language or financial barriers, end up working in low-paying, low-skill occupations.
Immigrants in Trades Training helps connect skilled New Canadians with funded training opportunities across BC. ITA’s four Service Providers help skilled New Canadians with hands-on experience, financial assistance, career counseling, and more.

DIVERSEcity – Helps New Canadians prepare for and understand what’s required to gain Canadian employment and certification. This involves assessment of training and education needs, what financial supports are required, and defining previous work experience. www.dcrs.ca

STEP – Works with New Canadians and employers to match existing skills to labour needs. Assesses skilled workers for job readiness and connects them with the training they need to be job ready. www.stepbc.ca

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. - Helps New Canadians access the resources and services to help them enter the trades. Counselors work with the participants to develop a Trades Action Plan that outlines the steps to gaining trade certification and employment. www.successbc.ca
