Restaurant Review: Toku Japanese Restaurant

If you were looking for something a bit more elevated than dining at the food court, Toku might just be the right choice. The interior has comfortable seating and is modern.

Their menu is extensive with a selection of sushi, robata (BBQ), bowls and much more.

We started off with their Ebi Mayo, which is nicely breaded just right. The prawn has a good snap to it. The slightly tangy mayo drizzled on top helps cut the grease. But it’s a little pricey for five pieces.

The Toku Signature roll had prawn tempura and cucumber inside, topped with flamed salmon, avocado, and their special sauce. The rice is a little chewy and didn’t stick together very well. The chunks of salmon on the top are formidable and the prawn tempura isn’t so bad on the inside – still crispy.

The Chawan Mushi is an egg custard (although this type of egg custard is savory). This one is served with mushroom and shrimp. The overall taste could use a bit more ingredients.

The Yaki Soba was made with chicken. The noodles were cooked well and there was a good mix of veggies and chicken slices. The sweet and tangy sauce overpowered this dish a bit.

Finally, the Gindara Miso – black cod marinated and grilled with miso. The black cod is tender, buttery and easy to cut through with a pair of chopsticks. It was slightly on the fishy side compared to other places that make the same dish.

Overall, I feel that Toku has a good selection of items. Many items are overpriced – but some are reasonable. There are some interesting items on their menu like Foie Gras toast and their sashimi bowls, but I’m not quite sure I’d have another reason to come back here.
