Documentary gives more insight into Filipino migrant workers in Hong Kong

People can watch “Sunday Beauty Queen”, Baby Ruth Villarama’s documentary at select theatres May 14 at 7 pm. The show will be played at North Vancouver’s Cineplex Esplanade, Surrey’s Cineplex Strawberry Hill and at Vancouver’s Cineplex Theatre.

The film won best picture at the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Shot over four years, “Sunday Beauty Queen” follows OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) five Filipino maids and domestic helpers who compete to become Hong Kong’s beauty queens on Sunday, their only one day off. They toil for little wages to support their families. “Sunday Beauty Queen” features five women in Hong Kong working as domestic helpers. Each week, they also raise funds for OFWs who need help.

“I just hope that future leaders and decision makers studying at Harvard would form a deeper understanding of the plight of our migrant workers, as well as of the value of their work in different parts of the world. I also hope to hear some suggestions on the best courses of action to take, in order to improve the government’s services to our OFWs (overseas Filipino workers),” says Villarama.

Organizer Kristine Bautista commended the documentary for showcasing the courage and resilience of Filipino women.

“Despite being away from their homeland, they’ve managed to cope with the challenges of daily life so they can support and provide for their families,” she said.
